in the Liberal Studies Degree

(1) On pp. 884-85, Paine outlines his topic and strategy for this essay.  What is his main point (thesis)? How does it relate to Enlightenment thinking?

  (1)  that America flourished under England (885)
  (2)  that England protects America (885)
  (3)  that England provides unity to the different colonies (886)
  (4)  that England is the parent country  (886)
  (5)  that strength is gained in their union  (886)

(3) On page 887 in the middle of the page, Paine outlines the primary harm that he feels will come from dependence on England.  What is the focus of his concerns?

(4) On page 887 at the bottom and on page 889, Paine uses Enlightenment thinking to defend his position that America should separate from England and set up its own government.  Outline his argument, noting how it is based on Enlightenment ideas.
