Department of Health Sciences, College of Health Professions,
Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, FL

  • Position:  Instructor
  • Dates:  August, 1999 – Present
    Duties: Develop and teach six credits or a minimum of two courses per semester in health professions practice, interdisciplinary core curriculum, and practicum courses in the department curricula.  Curricula are delivered on campus and via various distance learning modalities.  Participate in curriculum development, departmental policies and procedures development, course development, service learning activities, student recruitment, and assist with the technological facets of distance learning.  Also, assist other faculty and professional staff in teaching, research, and service activities directly related or supplemental to the instructional and academic mission of the department, manage and develop the departmental web page, and participate in committees as deemed appropriate by the department chair. 
  • Position:  Assistant in Interdisciplinary Studies
  • Dates:  August, 1997 – August, 1999
  • Duties: Assisted faculty and professional staff in teaching, research, and service activities directly related or supplemental to the instructional and academic mission of the department. Also assisted in student recruitment activities and served as department web master. Additional responsibilities included assisting in the design and development of teaching aids, assisting in distance education including coordination of course media, educational material, and web sites, distributing course and support materials to students, facilitating small group sessions, and participating in committees as deemed appropriate by the department chair.



Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, Lee Memorial Health System, Fort Myers, FL

  • Position:  Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Physiologist
  • Dates:  August, 1988 – August, 1997
  • Duties:  Evaluation of the risk status of Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III Program participants and the development of individualized interventions aimed at reducing relevant risk factors.  Responsibilities included patient education, exercise prescription, exercise training, graded exercise tolerance testing and interpretation, phlebotomy and interpretation of results, anthropometrics, client orientation, and client referral to pertinent lifestyle modification programs.  Also served as liaison between clients and referring physicians.


Cardiac & Intervention Center at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

  • Position:  Graded Exercise Test Coordinator
  • Dates:  September, 1987 - August, 1988
  • Duties:  Client orientation and interviews, anthropometric measurements, pulmonary function tests, data interpretation for patients, data reduction and preparation of lab reports for referring physicians.  Responsibilities also included serving as  ECG technologist, VO2 technologist, and blood pressure technologist as needed.
  • Position:  ECG Technologist
  • Dates:  September, 1987 - December, 1987
  • Duties:  Patient preparation and application of electrodes for twelve lead ECG’s, ECG monitoring during maximal graded exercise tests, ECG recording involving a variety of protocols, reducing and summarizing data obtained during testing.
  • Position:  Cardiac Track Program Leader
  • Dates:  June, 1987 - September, 1987
  • Duties:  Supervision of patients in a controlled intensity exercise program. Participants included patients with stable ischemic heart disease, seven to fourteen week post MI patients, four to eight week post bypass surgery patients, stable exertional angina patients, and asymptomatic patients with positive GXT’s.  Additional responsibilities included periodic monitoring of ECG’s, heart rates, and blood pressures, and preparation and presentation of case reviews.
  • Position:  Intervention Swimming Program Leader
  • Dates:  January, 1987 - June, 1987
  • Duties:  Supervision of participants in a prescribed intensity swimming program. Participants included individuals with asymptomatic heart disease beyond twelve months post MI or bypass surgery, individuals with significant patterns of heart disease risk, asymptomatic individuals who had borderline positive responses to exercise testing, hypertensives, diabetics, and individuals with marked obesity.  Additional responsibilities included blood pressure monitoring, occasional ECG monitoring,  and preparation and presentation of case reviews.
  • Position:  Cardiac Track Program Exercise Assistant
  • Dates:  September, 1986 - December, 1986
  • Duties:  Supervision of participants in a controlled intensity exercise program. Responsibilities included monitoring blood pressures, heart rates, and  ECG’s.  Additional responsibilities included presenting mini-lectures, preparation and presentation of case reviews, and preparation for emergency procedures.



Human Performance Laboratory, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA

  • Position:  Graduate Assistant
  • Dates:  March, 1987 - August, 1988
  • Duties:  Maintenance of graded exercise testing equipment, including gas analysis systems, ECG systems, treadmills, and ergometers. Other responsibilities included supply inventory, maintenance of crash carts and additional lab equipment, developing and updating maintenance procedures.


Cardiovascular Risk Modification Program, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Jackson, MS

  • Position:  Research Assistant
  • Dates:  March, 1982 - July, 1984
  • Duties:  Screening, assessing, and supervising patients in the Hypertensive Exercise Program, using a combination of physiological and psychological measures.  Additional responsibilities included data collection and assessment of patients involved in intervention programs aimed at reducing a variety of cardiovascular risks, including sodium intake, obesity, medication noncompliance, diabetes, and sedentary lifestyle.


Department of Psychology, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV

  • Position:  Research Assistant
  • Dates:  January, 1980 - August, 1981
  • Duties:  Pretreatment screening, data collection, individual and group interventions, and preparing data for presentation.  Primary area of research was behavioral methods for the reduction of myopia.
