The Southwest Florida Model United Nations Program is not a competition.
However, recognoition for student effort is important to the administators
of the program, to the supporters of the program, to the schools that view
the Model United Nations as a valuable educational tool, and to the students
themselves, who work to make the conference a rewarding experience.
All awards will be presented during Closing Ceremonies on the second day of
the conference. Certificates of Participation will be forwarded to schools
within a month following the conference. Schools may distribute the Certificates
at their own discretion.
The following awards will be offered:
Scholarships
In 1998 scholarships will be offered for the first time. Eligibility for
scholarships includes:
- three years of participation in the Southwest Florida
Model United Nations program;
- graduating senior;
- performance level;
- recognition by judges.
The scholarships are Sponsored by the NAPLES COUNCIL ON WORLD AFFAIRS and
individual supporters of the Southwest Florida Model United Nations. The
number of scholarships will be determined by the number of eligible students.
it is hoped that winners of the scholarships will be determined by the conclusion
of the conference and thus, those deserving students can be announced during
Closing Ceremonies.
Bradford Morse Award (Best Position Paper)
Delegates are encouraged to prepare position papers on their countires. (See
delegate manual part IV for instructions.) The preparation of these papers will
assist delegates in assembling their research in an organized manner. The position
paper is a one page document explaining the reasoning for the position held by the
country on an issue.
Schools will review their students' position papers and submit the best for
recognition. Florida Gulf Coast University will screen the position papers
submitted and select three to five for final review by a commite from the
Board of Honorary Trustees and others. Three papers will be selected for
recognition, in ranked order, at the conference.
Position papers will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Accurate reflection of the country's position
- Proper format
- Style and language
Delegate Awards
Delegate awards will be presented in each of the four committees, and the Security
Council. Three places will be awarded in each, except the Security Council which
will receive only two places.
Judges from the community at large will monitor the actions of delegates during the
two day conference. They will carefully evaluate all the delegates in their committee.
Judges will make their assesments on the following criteria (not listed in order of
importance):
- Use of parlimentary procedures
- Consistency of role
- Accurate presentation of country's policies
- Negotiation skills
- Use of dipolmatic courtesy
Delegation Awards
Delegation awards are the result of the cumulative efforts of all the delegates
representing one country. Total delegate points from all the committees, except
the Security Council will be combined and the top delegations (those with the
highest number of delegate points) will receive awards in three places. Security
Council awards will be evaluated sepa`rately, but delegates to the Security Council
share in awards won by their delegations.
Thus delegations with consistently good performance by its members may accumulate more
points than a delegation with only one or two members with high perfomances.
Certificates of Participation
All student delegates who participate in the two day conference will receive
Certificates of Participation.
