WEEK ONE INTRODUCTION - August 24 - 30

Week one assignments are designed to familiarize students with the format of the course page and to introduce them to the various technologies used in this web-based distance learning course. After you have completed assignments for week one, you will be able to access the cyber classroom by clicking on the door at the bottom of this page.

Subscribe to the course listserv.
A listserv is an e-mail "mailing list." When e-mail is sent to the address of the listserv, everyone who is subscribed will receive a copy. Students will use the listserv to collaborate and to "discuss" class topics with their instructor and classmates.

INSTRUCTIONS
Click the icon in the left column to access the listserv subscription web page. On the subscription web page:

1. Type in your e-mail address. (Enter the e-mail address you will use for this class. You can use either your FGCU e-mail account OR, if applicable, your private e-mail account provided by an Internet Service Provider (IBM, AOL, Prodigy, etc.).
2. Click "Submit."

The e-mail address for this class is: cjsystems@jade.fgcu.edu

IMPORTANT: You will receive a confirmation e-mail message indicating that you have successfully subscribed to the course listserv. Be sure to read the confirmation e-mail -- an additional assignment will be included.

Reminder: When sending e-mail, always remember to "sign" your name!

E-mail
Create and attach a document to an e-mail message and send it to your professor's e-mail address.
You will use your professor's e-mail to ask specific questions regarding the class and to turn in exams and papers to be graded.

STEP ONE

1. Create a new document using a word processor (MSWord, WordPerfect, MSWorks, etc.).
2. In the document, type the following: "I have successfully accessed week one assignments!"
3. Save the document using the filename "attach".

4. Close the document and exit the word processing program.

STEP TWO - SEND E-MAIL WITH DOCUMENT ATTACHED
1. Using your e-mail program, compose a new e-mail message.
2. Address your e-mail to
ssmith@fgcu.edu
3. In the Subject field type "Week One Atta
chment"
4. Attach the document called "attach".

5. Sign your name at the bottom of your e-mail!
6. Send.

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO SEND THE ATTACHMENT, SEND AN E-MAIL MESSAGE TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR INDICATING THAT YOU FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS BUT WERE UNABLE TO ATTACH THE DOCUMENT. IN YOUR MESSAGE, PLEASE INDICATE:

  • which word processing program you used to create the document.
  • the type of computer you are using (PC, Mac) and the operating system (Windows 95, Windows 3.1).
  • a brief description of the problems you encountered and any error messages you received.

1. Be sure to explore the library tutorials for information on using LUIS and other electronic databases to find books and journal articles. Click here to go directly to library tutorial on using LUIS.

2. After you have explored the library tutorials, answer the following questions:

A. List five things you can locate using WebLUIS.
B. What is the URL (address) of the library web page titled
"Locate: Books, Journals and Articles?"

1. You must have a student ID to obtain library materials!! If you do not have your student ID, click HERE for information on receiving your student ID with 14 digit PIN number.

2. Send an e-mail message to your professor ssmith@fgcu.edu with the date you mailed your request to Student Services.

Access and practice using a search engine.
Click the icon in the left column to link to Yahoo. Other search engines include, Lycos, Excite, Infoseek, etc.

1. Practice an Internet search by finding information on the "women and crime."
2. Find a web site that you find interesting and write down the web address on a piece of paper:

  • You will use this web address in the assignment below.
  • An example of a web address is http://itech.fgcu.edu/justice/divcj.html

Send an e-mail message to the class listserv and include the web address of the web site you found in your search (see assignment above).
When e-mail is sent to the listserv, your instructor and all the students in your class will receive a copy of the e-mail.

1. Using your e-mail program, compose a new message.
2. Address your e-mail to cjsystems@jade.fgcu.edu
3. In the Subject field, type "Web site".
4. In the message body, type the address of the web site you found (see assignment above) and include a brief message telling your classmates why you found the web site interesting.

Sign your name at the bottom of your e-mail!
6. Send.

Click the door to enter the Cyber Classroom.
