Baltzan, P. et al., Business Driven Technology, Fourth Edition (New York, NY: McGraw-Hill, 2010) Hardcover ISBN 0073376795 . [But, the 3rd edition is acceptable too (ISBN : 0073376744)]

[For 4th Edition: Browse Business Driven Technology - Textbook Information Center at: https://paris.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073376795/information_center_view0/ ]

For 3rd Edition: Browse Business Driven Technology - Textbook Information Center at: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073376744/information_center_view0/ ]

To rent the textbook (usually cheaper), consider checking: http://www.chegg.com/search/baltzan/

2. Attendance Policy: Monitored and measured via your active and consistent participation in online discussion forums, practice quizzes and other assessments.

3. Access: This course requires access to a PC----with the latest version of Microsoft's Windows, Internet Explorer and Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) installed----in order to complete the online activities. Of course, the PC must have Internet access. Reason: You will be using the Internet and MS Office to complete several assignments.

4. CSG Prerequisite: The prerequisite for this course is a working knowledge of Microsoft's Windows and Office  equivalent to "CGS 1100 Introduction to Computers."  If you are not familiar with these applications, we suggest co-registering in "CGS 1100 Introduction to Computers" at www.fgcu.edu .

5. To Start: Point your browser to http://elearning.fgcu.edu and follow these steps:

a.     Log on using your EAGLE EMAIL username and password.  [NOTE:  You MUST have activated your FGCU Student Account FIRST in order to login. See: http://admin.fgcu.edu/IS/applications/studentaccts/activate.asp .  If you have any Angel or IT problems, please contact the Help Desk at 239.590.7100 or helpdesk@fgcu.edu . [If the problem is not resolved, please contact me at wrodrigz@fgcu.edu or Angel administrator Neela Chevli at nchevli@fgcu.edu .]

b.    The first time you login http://elearning.fgcu.edu (Angel), you may be prompted to complete a Personal Information sheet. If that is the case, please input your first name, last name, and FGCU email address.  All other information is optional.

c.    The courses are automatically populated in Angel by the FGCU Banner Registration Information System. But, you wont' see it listed until it's activated about week before classes start. At that time, you will see the course listed and you just need to click on the course link. [If the course is not listed in your page ("My Page"), please contact wrodrigz@fgcu.edu or click "Courses" and “Find a course” and check with the registrar. On the next screen, under Courses, click the link “Find a course.”  In the “Key word search” box, put in the Course Registration Number (CRN) for this course, or your instructor’s last name (Rodriguez)]

d.    Select your course section (ISM 3011 Information Systems - CRN 80867) from the list. In some cases, you may have to click on the link beneath the course name that says “Enroll (no PIN required)”.* Once you have clicked that link, you may see a pop-up window advising you that you have successfully enrolled in the course. [*Note: In this case, it is important to click the “Enroll (No PIN required)” link to get into the course as a student and not as a guest (if you can’t see the “Lessons” material, you are enrolled as a guest).]

e.    Under Course Announcements heading, click “All” to view all announcements posted so far (you may also have to  click "Descending" or "Ascending" to view them in desired order.)

f.      Finally, click the "Lessons" menu and the "Unit 0 Roll Call Forum." Also, take the Diagnostic Pretest which does not count for grade).

g.     Please follow the directions in the Roll Call forum. After reading the instructor and your peers’ remarks, click “reply” to enter your comments—remembering that we want to conduct a conversational-style, threaded discussion----that is, a dialogue that is as close as possible to a regular class conversation ... where the professor asks a question and one or two students respond to the questions ... then other students react to what has been discussed. [See grading criteria by clicking here.]

6. Check your e-mail daily for news and updates.

7. Carefully read the objectives below (left column) and complete assignments by the due date (right column).

Description of Course Objectives, Lessons and Assignments

General Course Objectives:

This course explores how information technology (IT) supports business initiatives. In general, you will learn about: (1) managing information systems; (2) using IT to enhance business decision-making; (3) creating e-collaborative partnerships; and (4) using IT to transform the enterprise.

To this effect, the course integrates three major IT areas: e-Strategy, e-Tools; and e-Business. And here is what you will learn in each area:

e-Strategy

The e-Strategy area focuses on information systems' strategy case studies and current security issues. You will explore the differences between the various types of information systems and its use for increasing business' efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. You will learn how your organization can "achieve the scale, scope, and efficiency that comes from being large and the flexibility, speed, and responsiveness of being small (Ref. a)." You will also learn the strategic implications of using IT and how it impacts organizations and operations throughout the supply/demand chain.  You will learn how to gain competitive advantage using using Value Chain Analysis (VCA), Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) principles and techniques.

e-Tools

The e-Tools part includes an overview of information systems technology, flow and control of information in an organization and use in decision making. You will analyze IT business problems and communicate solutions using information-age tools and operational strategies. You will learn the best IT practices and principles. And how information systems can be used to address business challenges. You will understand fundamental IT concepts and terminology. You will understand the basic database, decision-making, and collaborative tools used in information-age businesses.

e-Business

The e-business part concentrates on technology platforms to prepare students to utilize IT for exploring business opportunities and solving problems in a global business environment. You will apply and analyze competitive IT strategies in the design of an Internet-based enterprise (e-Business) ---including on-line presentation of e-business plan (and, optionally, creating a web site using html coding and/or Front Page engine.) You will assess the social, environmental, and economic impact of your e-business by-products, processes and operations. You will learn about business adaptability.

The activities in this project and the course address the following learning university objectives:

1.1- Demonstrate excellence in critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis and strategic planning.

1.2- Demonstrate effective use of a variety of communication skills and modalities.

2.1 Creative and Analytical Thinking: be able to link data, knowledge and insight to make quality strategic decisions on a timely basis.

2.2 Communication Skills: In a leadership position, be able to give and exchange information within meaningful contexts and with appropriate delivery and interpersonal skills.

2.4 Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills: Be able to work with others in diverse and cross-functional environments, and to lead as the need arises.

2.5 Technological Proficiency: Be able to use technology to facilitate life-long learning, to enhance leadership development, and to add value to stakeholders, customers and employers.

3.2 Written and Oral Communication

3.3 Computer Usage

4.1 Ethical Issues

4.5 Technological Issues

General Learning & Assessment Strategies:

Here is how we will guide you through the course and how we assess your work.

  • What will we learn? Simply put, you will learn how to achieve business success through IT. And you will design your own e-business. To this effect, this course covers three concurrent areas, as follows (also see left column):
    • e-Strategy
    • e-Tools
    • e-Business
  • How do we communicate?  Mainly, we communicate via e-mail and online discussion forums at: http://elearning.fgcu.edu .
  • When do we meet?
  • Virtually, using the Angel web resources at: http://elearning.fgcu.edu .
  • What do you need to do?
  • Scroll down to find and work on the lessons & assignments in general, lessons & assignments consist of:
    • reading assigned textbook chapters,  cases, or articles
    • researching online information
    • reviewing narrated slides, videos & podcasts
    • participating in online forums.
    Here are the typical activities:
    • Read assigned units in Baltzan-Phillips BDT textbook and posted notes on Angel.
    • Perform online research to supplement the readings.
    • Reply to discussion forum questions on posted notes and BDT's textbook, independent research and/or e-business articles.
    • Check your e-mail daily for updates.
  • How is your participation evaluated?:
    • In addition to active participation in discussion forums (which accounts for 50% of the course grade), students complete two major  activities: Midterm Assessment (25%) and Final e-business project (25%). The grading criteria for active participation includes both quantity and quality of contributions--- emphasizing the relevance of the particular contribution to the topic and objectives at hand. Duplicity or unrelated comments are not penalized---but are not counted. Usually, comments that have “higher density" of thought are assigned higher value. For instance, very insightful and/or experiential (your own original ideas and real-life business experiences) comments may earn a 9.5 or even a 10. But, say quoting the textbook, paraphrasing, or restating the obvious, may earn an 8.0, since it’s correct (but, obviously, not as valued as a "higher density" comment.) For additional grading details, see in the Syllabus' General section at: http://itech.fgcu.edu/cis/Syllabus3011.htm  (next to last section.)
    • To succeed in the class, you must complete all the activities listed on the Angel resource for this course in a timely manner (see detailed deadlines below.)
    • Please be aware that no credit will be given for late postings. However, you will have one full week to complete each of the unit assignments. No credit will be given to late postings (i.e., after the deadline has passed.)
