Welcome to the ISM 6021 MIS graduate course! This syllabus is an essential map to the course detailing the learning units, objectives, assignments and assessment strategies. Therefore, I would like to urge you to read it very carefully. Sincerely, Walter Rodriguez

Catalog Description: Introduces computer information systems technology (IT) principles, tools and strategies used to gain competitive advantage in the marketplace. The emphasis is on addressing business problems in the "information-age" and communicating--in writing and with commonly used desktop software--the results of one's analysis of a business IT problem or situation. In addition, students apply IT strategies in the design of an Internet-based enterprise (E-Commerce)--including on-line presentation of e-business plan and enterprise resource planning (ERP) strategy.

Executive Summary for ISM 6021: In this unique online Management Information System (MIS) course, you will research and connect to the techno-strategic use of information systems (IS) as well as the e-business processes utilized for increasing efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and profits. Drawing on the scholarship of multiple authors and IT researchers, you will research and learn how your firm can achieve the scale, scope, and efficiency that comes from being large and the flexibility, speed, and responsiveness of being small. Collectively, you and your peers will research and discuss the implications of using information technology and how it impacts operations throughout the supply chain.  In addition to the theoretical and strategic IT concepts (Applegate 8e), this course also covers practical IT/e-business topics (Rappa's Managing the Digital Enterprise), as follows:

  • how to design virtual business processes that are user friendly;
  • how to measure performance and effectiveness;
  • how to understand business models;
  • how markets change as more consumers migrate online;
  • techniques for automating business processes;
  • how to avoid channel conflict and exploit channel synergy;
  • how to foster trust in computer-mediated interaction;
  • how to securely manage the digital enterprise;
  • how to protect digital intellectual property;
  • how to operate online in an ethical manner.

Here is how to start the course:

1. Course Textbook*

Applegate, L.M. et al., Corporate Information Strategy and Management: Text and Cases, Eight Edition 8/e  (New York, NY: McGraw-Hill, 2009) ISBN: 0073402931 [Browse Applegate's Corporate Information Center http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073402931/information_center_view0/]*

2. Networked Computer: This course requires access to a PC----with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) installed----in order to complete the online activities. Of course, the PC must have Internet access. Reason: You will be using the Internet and MS Office to complete several assignments. [Note: The prerequisite for this course is a working knowledge of Microsoft's Windows and Office equivalent to "CGS 1100 Introduction to Computers."  If you are not familiar with these applications, we suggest registering in "CGS 1100 Introduction to Computers" at www.fgcu.edu.]

3. First online assignment: Point your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser to http://elearning.fgcu.edu and follow these steps:

a.  Log on using your EAGLE EMAIL username and password.  [NOTE:  You MUST have activated your FGCU Student Account FIRST in order to login. See: http://admin.fgcu.edu/IS/applications/studentaccts/activate.asp .   If you have any Angel or IT problems, please contact the Help Desk at 239.590.7100 or helpdesk@fgcu.edu . [If the problem is not resolved, please contact me at wrodrigz@fgcu.edu or Angel administrator Neela Chevli at nchevli@fgcu.edu .]

b.  The first time you login http://elearning.fgcu.edu (Angel Course Management System), you may be prompted to complete a Personal Information sheet. If that is the case, please input your first name, last name, and FGCU email address.  It's very important to enter your exact FGCU e-mail address, since it's the main base for most class communications. All other information is optional; but, you may even enter your photo or preferred picture.

c.  Select your course (ISM 6021 Management Info Systems) from the list and click on the link. In some cases, you may need to click beneath the course name that says “Enroll (no PIN required)”.* Once you have clicked that link, you may see a pop-up window advising you that you have successfully enrolled in the course. [*Note: If you are asked, it is important to click the “Enroll (No PIN required)” link to get into the course as a student and not as a guest (if you can’t see the “Lessons” material, you are enrolled as a guest).]

d.  Finally, click the "Lessons" menu and the "Unit 0 Roll Call Forum."

e.  Please follow the directions in the Roll Call forum. After reading the instructor and your peers’ remarks, click “reply” to enter your comments—noting that we want to conduct a conversational-style, threaded discussion----that is, a dialogue that is as close as possible to a regular class conversation ... where the professor asks a question and one or two students respond to the questions ... then other students react to what has been discussed. Description of Course Objectives, Lessons and Assignments
General Course Objectives:

* You will research the approaches executives use to make IT decisions as well as how organizations attempt to leverage IT to create business advantage.

* You will learn the concept of a business model as a key framework that guides executive decision-making and action.

* You will research how emerging technologies influence approaches to managing IT assets, projects, and risks.

* You will explore the responsibilities, obligations, and expectations of IT leaders as businesses try to exploit today's IT solutions and services to drive business advantage.

* You will research and analyze IT business problems and communicate solutions using information-age tools and operational strategies.

* You will learn the best IT practices and principles. And how information systems can be used to address business challenges. You will understand fundamental IT concepts and terminology. You will understand the basic database, decision-making, and collaborative tools used in information-age businesses.

  General Learning & Assessment Strategies:

Here is how we will guide you through the course and how we assess your work.

  • What will we learn? Simply put, you will research new Information Technology (IT) developments. And you will learn "how IT enables organizations to conduct business in radically different and more effective ways" (Applegate, 2009). In addition, you will develop and write your own strategic e-business plan (or, alternatively, write an article about the MIS or e-business fields.)
  • How do we communicate?  We communicate via e-mail and online forums. at: http://elearning.fgcu.edu .
  • When do we meet?
  • Virtually, anytime, using the Angel web resources at: http://elearning.fgcu.edu .
  • What do you need to do?
  • Scroll down to find and work on the lessons & assignments in general, lessons & assignments consist of:
    • reading assigned chapters or articles
    • researching online information
    • participating in online forums.
    Here are the typical activities:
    • Perform online research to supplement the readings.
    • Reply to discussion forum questions on cases, independent research and/or e-business articles.
    • Check your e-mail daily for updates.
  • How is your participation evaluated?:
    • In addition to the discussion forums  (which accounts for 50% of the course grade), students complete two major  activities: Post Mid Assessment (25%) and Final Project  (25%).
    • The grading criteria for "participation" includes both quantity and quality of contributions--- emphasizing the relevance of the particular contribution to the topic and objectives at hand. Duplicity or unrelated comments are not penalized---but are not counted. Usually, comments that have “higher density" of thought are assigned higher value. For instance, very insightful and/or experiential (your own original ideas and real-life business experiences) or well researched comments may earn a 9.5 or even a 10. But, say quoting a book, paraphrasing, or restating the obvious, may earn an 8.0, since it’s correct (but, obviously, not as valued as a "higher density" comment.) For additional grading details, see in the Syllabus' at: http://itech.fgcu.edu/cis/Syllabus6021.htm  (next to last section)
